I worked in a mussel farm

He is a fisherman and a captain on the weekend
He brings people to Saint Kilda for 190£,
the cheapest on the market, he tells me, and the best!
At night he drinks and he bets
And when he wins a bet he takes a 50£ note of his wallet
And he invites everyone for a round of drinks
Sometimes he goes to the toilet to sniff a line of cocaine
And when he comes back his eyes are everywhere and nowhere and he sits alone on the sofa and he thinks about tonight where he will be alone sleeping on his boat
Just him and the ocean and the seagulls in the morning
He wonders what could have been
Had he left the island
So instead he drinks and he bets and he sniffs and he drinks and he bets and he sniffs
And when he’s done enough of that he goes outside to smoke a cigarette and he says to me
“I worked in a mussel farm, this was the easiest job I ever had
You just sit and wait”.
